Modern Hebrew becomes less mysterious when the moving parts are separated. First there are 22 base letters. Five of them change shape at the end of a word. Words run right to left. Vowel marks may appear, but ordinary adult text often leaves them out.
A four-stage route
- Learn the alphabet in order and recognise print shapes.
- Add the common sounds, including the variable dot pairs.
- Practise final letters and short words.
- Add Ktav Yad and handwriting.
Do not wait until you “know everything” before writing. The hand is part of the memory system. Use the beginner alphabet page as a practical starting point.
