“How to learn the Hebrew alphabet” usually means a colour PDF and a promise of 24 hours. I did the PDF. I still mixed up dalet and resh in week three.

Here is the version that survived contact with an actual hand.

What “knowing the alphabet” should mean

Not: I can pick shin from a multiple choice.

Yes: I can write the print shape, I know it has a cursive twin, and I do not freeze when mem becomes ם at the end of a word.

If you only need to read pointed scripture on a screen, print recognition might be enough. If you want notes, boards, and forms, the hand has to show up.

The inventory

• 22 letters, aleph to tav.
• 5 finals (sofit) for kaf, mem, nun, pe, tsadi.
• Two scripts: print (block) and Ktav Yad (everyday Israeli handwriting).

That is the whole job. Vocabulary is a different job. Speaking is a different job. Do not load them on the same evening.

A sequence that does not collapse

Days 1–14. Names plus print. Point at the letter. Say the name. Then write it. I used a chart of all 22 as a map, not as a worksheet to finish in one sitting.

Then. Keep going in order so you do not skip the ugly ones (ayin, tsadi). Two letters when tired. Five when not.

Then. Ktav Yad for the letters you can already write in print. Same names, new outlines.

Then. Sofit pairs on the same day you think you “know” kaf.

I wrote down how long that actually took. The clock starts when you trace, not when you download a streak.

What to ignore at the start

Biblical vs modern debates. Paleo Hebrew. Full vowel pointing. “Learn to speak for free” playlists. Those searches are real. They are not this skill.

Check yourself without a teacher

Write yesterday’s letter from memory. If a stranger could not tell dalet from resh, you do not know it yet. Trace again. A unit quiz is useful after the traces exist, not instead of them.
